PVG - FRA Night flight. Check-In at an almost empty terminal. Very small business class (24 seats) on the A332. Efficient service to ensure quite a long time to sleep. Seats comfortable, but angled lie-flat. And a very competitive fare on this route.

HKG-PVG-JFK return. HKG to PVG 1 hour delay, approaching PVG we were re-directed to Shanghai SHA airport due to bad weather. Assistance for transit passengers was none. SHA airport was overcrowded and insufficiently staffed. Immigration took 3 hours to clear, we were transfered to PVG airport hours after our connecting flight had departed. I was almost refused entry into China because I didn't have a visa! Of course not I was supposed to be on a flight! Communication to "transit passengers" was non existent. Waited 3 hours for a simple ticket re- issue. No food, no apologies. Shuttled to a hotel I was put into a room with a Chinese man that didn't speak any English. I was refused a room of my own. Taken back to PVG the following afternoon, only to find out the flight had be cancelled. Taken to a different hotel. Given lunch and then back to the PVG late that night. We finally departed not for JFK but to LAX. I was refused an upgrade nor special treatment of any kind. Arrival to LAX, we were supposed to transfer to JFK. Problem was no one in LAX could assist us or knew that we were distressed tired and upset. The intended flight for us to transfer left without us. We had to check in once again onto an AA flight, where a rude, animated and obnoxious check in staff commented that we were lucky to even get seats! Waited for 11 hours in LAX for the midnight flight to JFK. Arrived in JFK 3 days after scheduled time. Return flight to PVG I was almost refused entry because I had not re-confirmed my seat. I was stuck at the back by the toilet, (my punishment for taking China Eastern Airlines) told I was lucky that I could take this flight!

HKG to FOC in Business Class. Check in efficient. The flight was comfortable and lunch was an excellent fish dish. Flight on-time in Fuzhou, and a smiling ramp attendant actually helped us carry the baby down to the transfer bus while we handled the carry-on bags. They lose a point for lack of English proficiency, which we eventually overcame with non-verbal cues.

Beijing-Shanghai Pudong, was allowed access to VIP lounge as I am MU silver member, the lounge was 100% full and not a single seat - only provided coke, instant noodle and water. Flight was delayed for 1 hour, inflight service really bad, they didn't serve any food even though it was dinner time flight!

PVG-HKG return. Arrived at PVG airport early and was able to check in straight away, headed down to the gate only to sit there for 3 hours while the plane flitted from being "on time" to "delayed". Repeatedly asked the customer service agents how long we would need to wait, the answers ranged from 30 mins to 3 hours. Once on the plane the flight was fine, the meal not great but on at 2 hr flight didn't really matter. The return to Shanghai, arrived at the airport, the flight had been cancelled, 'luckily' we only had to wait 2 hours for the next flight! Again flight was fine. China Eastern are so nearly a good airline but just miss the spot.

I flew China Eastern on a Qantas codeshare between SHA and PEK. Upgraded from Y to J for AUD$60 each way and worth every cent. MU lounge at SHA was a disgrace with very basic amenities and food/drink but at least there was free wireless. Onboard an old A340 and the seats were very dated. But service was excellent, attentive and I had a nice dinner. Return flight better. MU lounge at PEK pretty good with nice selection of drinks and instant noodles/cakes etc. PEK to SHA on a new A330 with angled lie-flat seats. Good service and great food. No english channels on the IFE though. All up, good value and would fly them again in Business class.

Shanghai Hongqiao-Xiamen return, both outbound and inbound were canceled without notice, was put to MF flight on outbound flight and delayed for 2.5hrs, inbound flight was changed to FM flight and delayed for 1 hr. MU is the worst airline I have flown!

KHN - Nanchang to Xi'an economy class. Group check-in smooth enough, aircraft interior worn and aircraft a little worn. No inflight entertainment, nor any meal or snack. Safety Procedure slightly lacking in some areas, as were staff throughout the journey.

Beijing - Shanghai - Hong Kong business class. This airline could be really good, if only it could get its service on the ground equivalent to its service in the air. On arrival at Beijing for the flight to Shanghai we were told that the flight we were booked on was delayed, but they had no idea how delayed except it was very delayed! So, as there is no point getting cross in China, I stood my ground, was unfailingly polite and was reaccomodated (and upgraded to first class) on a flight going to the old airport in Shanghai. This was a much better result than I first appreciated, as the old airport is only 15-20 minutes from downtown. But goodness knows who is in charge of their ground operations, as China Eastern offer an hourly shuttle service to Shanghai, yet the flight we boarded at 1800 was apparently - per the gate display - the delayed 1500 departure! Onboard the service was gracious, caring, with excellent food and on demand entertainment on a very new A330-200. Leaving Shanghai for Hong Kong, my hopes weren't high when I saw the first two Shanghai - Hong Kong flights had been cancelled that day. I was booked on the third. Yet they must have pulled some rabbits out of some hats, as we were only 5 minutes late taking off, and once again the service (on an A321 this time) was superb. I can't quite remember whether it was a four or five course lunch but you probably get the picture. So 1/10 for the ground operations (and they only get that for the upgrade), 8/10 for the inflight product.

Sydney-Shanghai-Xian-Beijing return. Aircraft run down, no care attitude, warm beer and cold green tea/coffe. Flights delay and cancelled on Xian-Beijing without any reason. Headphone looked used, as not in cover and just left in seat open, so recommend to take your own headset and some reading material to kill your time when flight is delayed and to avoid any scratchy movies.

Chose to fly MU as I was looking for a cheap fare from Singapore to Seoul. A340-600 aircraft interior was worn and poorly maintained. Inflight entertainment virtually non-existant except for a badly sub-titled chinese movie shown on flip-screens around the cabin. Transfer in Shanghai to Seoul was painful. Passengers had to clear immigration, collect baggage, and then re-check in at the departure hall. On Shanghai-Seoul sector, Korean stewardesses seemed to be doing all the work while the Chinese crew stood with folded-arms. My advice: Fly MU only if you really have to.
