Wu yue refer to Dong yue Mt. Taishan in the east(Shandong province),Xi yue Mt.Huashan in the west(Shanxi province),Nan yue Mt. Hengsan in the south(Hunan province),Bei yue Mt Hengshan in the north(Shanxi),and Zhongyue Mt. Songshan in the center(Henan).According to Chinese mythology,the Five great Mountains originated from the limbs and the head of Pangu,who is the first being and creator of the world.They are also Chinese famous Taoist Greate Mountains.The eastern Mount Taishan
Taishan is "First of the five sacred Mountains" in central Shandong province,has since anciet times,been a mountain held in high esteem by the Chinese people.Qufu,Shandong is the source of China Confucianism.
Mount Taishan became a sacred place haunted by emperors to offer sacrifices and meditate in the Zhou Dynasty over 1,000 years before the Christian era. A total of 72 emperors were recorded as visiting it. Men of letters also came to acquire inspiration, to compose poems, write
essays, paint and take pictures. Hence, a great many cultural relics were left on the mountain.Mount Taishan became part of the world cultural heritage list in 1987.
Standing in Huayin County, 120 km east of Xi'an City, Mt. Huashan is known as "The Number One Precipitous Mountain under Heaven." It is the tallest among the Five Great Mountains as well as a very beautiful scenic spot of China.
Mt. Huashan is famous for its breath-taking cliffs. Along the 12-kilometer-long winding path up to the top are awe-inspiring precipices, looking into which will take your breath away. Among the five peaks, East Peak (Facing Sun Peak), West Peak (Lotus Peak) and South Peak (Dropping Goose Peak) are comparatively high. Standing at the top of East Peak, one can enjoy the rising sun early in the morning. West Peak, in resemblance to a lotus flower, is the most graceful peak in Mt. Huashan.
The Southern Hengshan Mountain
Mt. Hengshan in the south (Hunan) has 72 peaks and extends 150 kilometers. The Huiyan Peak is the south end of the peaks, and Yuelu Mountain in Changsha City is the north end. And the Zhurong Peak is the highest with altitude of 1,290 meters. On the top, the Watching Sunrise Platform is the best scenic spot.
It is also a famous mountain worshipped by Buddhists in China. The mountain boats many temples, among which the biggest is the Nanyue Temple, which covers an area of 100,000 square meters and which is the largest group of ancient buildings in Hunan province.
Among the temples in the mountain, the Fuyan Temple is known as the nation's "temple of Buddhist doctrine" and the "Seven Founders' Temple to Perform Buddhist Rites". The Nantai Temple was built during the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) and is regarded as the origin of a Buddhist branch in Japan. In addition, the Tripitaka Temple, which is famous for its delicacy, the Fangguang Temple, which is quiet, and the Water-screen Cave, which is mysterious, are all spots of interest.
The northern Hengshan Mountain
Mount Hengshan has been regarded since ancient times as the "First Mountain Beyond the Great Wall".Legend says that when King Shun visited the mountain and saw the lofty peaks,he named it the "North Sacred Mountain".
Situated in the central part of Hunan Province, Mt.Hengshan is known as the Southern Sacred Mountain, one of the five great mountains in China, and has been praised as lithe first for its beauty among the five famous mountains". It boasts beautiful natural sceneries, with peaks rising one upon another. Among the 72 towering peaks, Zhurong Peak is the highest, rising to 1290 metres above sea level.
Mt. Hengshan has ancient cultural origins. According to historical records, there were nine emperors of the past dynasties visiting Mt. Hengshan and many scholars also made their tours of the mountain having left many inscriptions and poems.
The Central Mountain-Songshan MountainThe forest resources of Mt. Songshan are praised as rare treasure for their large quantity, antiquity, abundant literary quotation and vivid shapes. Mt. Songshan Stretches more than 60 km across from east to west. It consists of two mountains-Taishi and Shaoshi, with 36 Deaks alto ether. It also boasts a large number of cultural relics.
Mount Songshan is located in Dengfeng County, in the Henan province of the People Republic of China. The highest peak is 1440 mt.
Mt. Songshan got its fame from being the place where the Indian monk Batuo founded the Shaolin temple in 495 a.C. Few years later in 527 a.D. another Indian monk, Damo (or Bodhidharma) moved to the temple to teach the Chan sect of Buddhism, best known as Zen Buddhism (Zen is the way Japaneses read the Chinese ideogram for Chan). Buddhism was been already introduced in China during the first century b.C., but the many cultural differencies between India and China made the strict Hinayana form to be not well accepted. The Chan version was instead more adapt to the Chinese culture and became rapidly the most influential Buddhist school in China.
